on guns will kick off a new fight in washington. the nra spent $18.6 million supporting and opposing candidates during the 2012 cycle. according to the sun life found case, 51% of the numbers of the new congress have received funding from the national rifle association's political action committee at some point in their political careers. the nra is known for staying silent, running out the clock after tragedies like the one in newtown but yesterday there was a sign that they may be feeling more political pressure than ever before and from the changing tone around the country. group released a statement saying, "they are shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the newtown tragedy." out of respect for the families and as a matter of common decency we have given time for morning prayer and a full consideration of the facts before commenting. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to make sure this never happens again. the nra also announced a major news conference in the washington, d.c. area on friday. they didn't say where. while the nra spent several days mostly quiet, n

's actually never had a confirmed director. the senate changed the law and nra lobbied to force the atf to become a senate confirmation, therefore guaranteeing it could never really be confirmed. nra has successfully been able to block that. it's always had acting directors. also the president called for a way to make it easier to access mental health services. and then, of course, you did talk about changing the country's culture when it comes to violence. but -- and by being so specific and calling out congress on the atf which the gun lobby has made every effort to weaken, the president steamed to suggest he was ready for a political fight. even his selection of vice president biden who himself shepherded the original assault weapons ban through the senate judiciary committee nearly two decades ago is significant. remember this exchange between biden and a gun rights advocate at a 2007 presidential primary debate. >> myself and other americans really want to know if our babies are safe. this is my baby. purchased in the 1994 gun ban. >> senator biden, are you going to be able to keep

at all. the nra makes it seem like -- they fearmonger toward that idea but i think we need to not be offensive to those who have been killed and will be in the future by gun violence that can be -- and the nra leadership battles against even the most simple common sensical responses to this massive problem. >> and the white house certainly going to push. the president is going to talk about guns in his state of the union address next month. and my piece lays out as he does that, he can call for certain gun safety things. there's a lot that polls well, a lot that could arguably help deal with various problems. but the white house knows based on the polling that the president's going to have to talk about it as part of a balanced approach and cliche again today. and that he's going to have to explain in it a way that it doesn't seem like he's tramibling on the 2nd amendment. >> yeah. i actually agree with that, james. i think go ahead with gun control, go ahead with the things that make sense but in a way that's respectful. kudos for number two on the list, only use the word
